Blain, last October (Oct 7th, 2015), I did a review of the fantastic Askew-Taylor store for our fellow club members. I wanted to share my experience and urge everyone to buy local BEFORE shopping online. Little did I know at the time that I was writing a eulogy for this Raleigh institution. There were only a couple of responses to my post, but several hundred views, so maybe more of our members than I know about got the message and patronized the store.
Go back several pages to see my review - I think you'll agree I nailed it on the head as well as you did in your review. I'm sure gonna miss them.

You're absolutely right Bob. When I was in college I built architectural models and remember the late Mr. Taylor mixing Benjamin Moore 1QT latex paint to match pantone colors that the architects specified for us- he had an incredible eye and knew how the color wheel worked. Their service to their customers is unparalleled- they cannot be replaced. I just spent 80.00 there a few days ago and I'm going back this morning to buy some brushes and just look around for those rarities they often have.

Blain, I too loved and counted on the Taylors (both Hellen and Kirk), and used the store as my local hobby shop. NOTHING can take their place.  This hurts.
We'll never see genuine service again like they offered - not in our lifetime.

That's a real shame. Thanks, Blaine, for letting us know.

The venerable Askew Taylor Paints is closing soon after 70 yrs in the business. Loss of the parking lot lease as well as competition from online art supply sellers are the reasons or selling. I still have my Pasche H airbrush I bought there in 1980 and just this summer I bought a nice Iwata airbrush at a price that I couldn't find a match for online. Now, with everything in the store reduced 30%, the deals are even better. This place is an institution and is one of my favorite places in Raleigh. It was my go to place for contest balsa, nitrate dope, small tools, brushes, weathering supplies (oils, watercolor pencils, colored pens, pastel chalks, rub and buff....) Evergreen plastic, solvents, glues and adhesives, spray paint, tapes, K&S tubing, CF tubing, RC foam, flexi-file refills, knives and blades, small drill bits. It was a scratch modelers paradise and occassionally had some plastic kits and for a long time had Fine Scale Modeler. It's located downtown on Glenwood Ave just north of Snoopy's.

Go, buy, before Raleigh disappears before your eyes and is replaced by a giant f'ing Target!
