Yes, the color does look odd.  The color is Tamiya DARK SEA GRAY, but the photo makes it look blue.  I have never been what you would call a good photographer.

When it comes to using plastic or PE parts, I ask myself if the PE is a notable improvement over the plastic part.  If it isn't I don't use it. Super detail sets like the one I purchased for this ship are nice. But, I think far too often people detail and make themselves miserable for no reason. Photo etched parts can be used to fantastic effect, and are at times the best choice. But again, PE is automatically the solution.

The color looks unique. Not saying it's wrong as I nothing of the subject, just very bold but I am sure it will look good when completed as all of your models do.

I have only done railings on the bow with the anchor chains. I like to start there and work down the length of the ship. Complete everything in each section and move on.  Unless you are making multiple curves in the railing it isn't that hard.  Look, if I can do photo etched anyone can.

I just love photo etch railings! (Not really!)

I enjoyed my last ship project so much that I decided on another. This is the Imperial Russian Navy battleship Sebastopol. A lot of photo etched parts.
