Very nice I look forward to seeing it as well :)

Thanks Lee! The scratches on the sills were nicely done, not too much nor too little. Too bad about the lack of detail for the instrument panel.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the kind words.  The paint scratches on the cockpit sills and on high-wear areas inside the cockpit were indeed done with a silver Berol pencil.  Color photos of the Crusader show a very dull cockpit with almost no color anywhere, so all I did was drybrush the switches with a light gray.  Unusual for Trumpeter, they didn't provide either a decal or an acetate for the instrument panel dials -- just featureless raised circles.  If I had 1/32 scale decal dial faces (Mike Grant makes some, I think), I would have punched them out and attached them, but I unfortunately I didn't.  The instrument panel is kind of buried under the shroud and you have to really stick you face in close to see it, so I didn't bother.

Hey Lee, Very nicely done aircraft!!
Just a question.........How did you do the scratches on the cockpit edges? With a prisma pencil?
Also I noticed that you did not add much color to the cockpit switches and dials. Was this by choice or did the corsair not have colored cockpit?

Thanks

Wow, US Navy meets NASCAR.   :o That is the flashiest paint scheme I've seen on any carrier plane.  Good job Lee, that mutha looks fast just sitting there.  I look forward to seeing it in person.

Thanks all.  The kit provides all the wing fold detail.  In fact, it's pretty hard to build it in any other configuration other than with the wings folded.  I debated the configuration of wing incidence, flaps and slats, and outer panels, based on what period photos show.  In the end, it was a compromise -- the wing is rarely up, other than for catapult and landing, but the feature is so cool I had to show it off.

Wow! That is awesome Lee. Are the wing folds aftermarket? You did a fantastic job with the decals. Those had to be a pain to put on. I cannot wait to see. 9 months. Thats about right for a 32 scale jet this good!

This is the Trumpeter F-8E kit backdated to an F-8C configuration using the Fisher Model & Pattern conversion set, which provides a new seamless intake, nose, ejection seat, control stick, wing spine, wheels, metal landing gear, and clear resin windscreen.  Decals come from Zotz and are for an F-8C in the late 1950s deployed with VF-84.  The project lasted nine months, interrupted briefly to build Hawk Hunter's P-51B.  I will be bringing this to the September meeting.
