Thanks for the update Steve, I will call the Vet and have the discussion about the various classes.

Jon,
I looked in my stash, I have a 1/700 scale Sumner made by Albetross (I thik they are out of business).  This is a picture of the Charles S. Sperry (697) & the Haynsworth (700) - one of the Sumner class (Hull number for the Sumner is 692)  Goes good with the cutaway drawing.

Is this guy looking for accuracy or just a navy ship to put on the mantle?  I agree the 1/700 is rather small, but the 1/350 would be a good compromise.

I will do some more research on possible Sumner class models.

Thanks guys. I will pass this along. I like the cutaway of the Sumner.

Your are correct Norm it is the wrong class but it was a follow up design to Fletcher Class.

I saw where Yankee Modelworks makes a 1/350 Allen Class and Dragon makes a Gearing Class, which is the Allen Class plus 14'.

The difference from the Fletcher to Allen is dual rudders, Twin 5" deck guns and extra AA guns.

Looking at the Lindberg kit, it has the dual rudders. The Twin 5' would have to made plus what ever deck modes are needed.

Some plans. http://www.dd-692.com/shipyard.htm

One very good reason to try to convince him to do another model then the one he has; it's the wrong class!
Not sure what is available, but it would be worth a search.

Sounds interesting, look forward to hearing more.

Hey everyone,

I went to Hangar18 the other day to look for a few things a lunch and was really surprised by the increased number of plastic kits he is carrying. If you haven'y been in awhile, it may be worth checking out.

After talking with the owner, Bryan, I mentioned the club, told him we had his shop mentioned on our site, and showed him my latest build. After all that, he asked if I was interested in building a "boat" for a pilot. I mentioned the club's veteran builds and he showed me the kit that the vet had already purchased but didn't have anyone to build it for him. Yikes! It is a Fletcher from Lindberg in 1/125th... freakin 3 feet long. Let's discuss Sunday... it is a motorized kit but he doesn't want it that way, just a nice mantle piece.

The Vietnam pilot's name is Ron Randolph. He was rescued by DD 692 Allen M Sumner on 25 May 1967 and would like the Lindberg kit painted to match. Maybe we can talk him into a smaller scale...

I have Ron's number and will reach out to him about coming out to meet us.
