Title: Revell 1/72 B-24D "Blue Streak"
Post by: Bill L. on Wed 02/04/15 08:00 AM
This project is well under way.  I managed to actually do the things I planned.  Cleaned up the flash, applied the weathering on the insides, painted the props, wheels, pilots/gunners, guns, wheel wells, and landing gear.

I'll probably give all that a day or two to cure, especially the Aluminum enamel paint.

Next up, I'll take some worn 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper and take the raised rivets and panel lines down a bit.  Once that is done this kit will fly together.

Do they make a mask set for this kit.....  :(

What about a mask for the Hasegawa kit and modify it to fit?

I'll probably use scotch tape, burnish it down with a toothpick and then cut around it with a sharp Xacto blade.  That's what I have been doing lately and it seems to be working.  This will be time consuming.

Make sure you either have some strong coffee to keep you awake while doing this!

Update: Been fighting a bad head cold all week, so not much progress.

I took some worn 600 grit sand paper and knocked off a large percentage of the raised rivets over the entire model.  Now there's enough to see but not cut your fingers on LOL!

I also managed to get the Neutral Grey on the obvious parts.  I'll start the assembly of the sub-assemblies and fuselage today. Not looking forward to the time I'll need to put in to mask all the 'greenhouse' areas before I start the OD.  The instructions say to only paint the bottom surfaces.... are they kidding... that is a very gross shade of green!

Helpful color point:

The landing gear and wheel wells of a B-24D are the same color as the undersurface: Neutral Gray.

A little further along today.

Since I had today (2/16 - Presidents Day) off I got a chance to put some more time in on the B-24D.  I painted the OD Green surfaces and then touched up the Neutral Grey surfaces I missed on the first pass.  I'm using Tamyia paints and 91% alcohol as thinner in it lays down beautifully.

I realized I missed port side of the #4 engine nacelle but I'll get that after the final construction.  I want to touch up the line of demarcation between the OD and grey on the rudders as well. I see a little over spay there.

I'll start the assembly tomorrow after the paint dries over night.

Looks good Bill. I like the way you paint as you go. I often thought if I ever get around to building a big bomber I would approach the project in the same way.

UPDATE: Work and weather have kept me quite busy, with very little time for modeling.  I finally managed to sit down Monday night and invest some more time on this project. Turns out the wings were too big for the cut-outs in the fuselage and needed a 'little effort' to mount them.  After splitting the seam on top of the fuselage and much TLC, I finally got them attached.  I then used Tamyia's thin glue to reattach the fuselage together where it had split.  Wing areas between engine nacelles too.

But now it's back on track.

BTW - while that was drying I got the decals on the SEPECAT Jaguar you see on the shelf in the back left side of the picture.  Some clear coat and that kit will be done.

So I ended up going back and doing some seam work, since this plane is going to be 'hanging' and will mostly be seen from the bottom.  Applying skills taught at the Lee Kolosna School of Modeling (not to be confused with the NY Fashion district school .. LOL) I wrestled them down to something I could tolerate. Once the wet sanding was done I washed the model with warm water.

How it dried, was a sight to behold.  It gave me all kinds of Ronnie Murray ideas of abandoned aircraft, beaten by the hot sun.....  So I thought I'd show you the pic before I started repainting.

Oh yeah, cause someone will ask, I'm using Tamyia Neutral Gray and OD Green, thinned 45-50% with 91% alcohol. Tough as nails against low-tac masking tape!!

Lots of progress.  Long story longer: I repainted, repaired, hand painted the canopy and class house nose.  Today I sprayed a nice coat of Future.  I'll let it settle over night and begin the nightmare that 'Old Decals' are, tomorrow .... if time allows.

As old a model as this it, with all it's gaps and deficiencies, I am rather please with how it's turning out.

Well it's been awhile since the last post but progress is being made.  Almost done actually.  Only remaining work is to put the ball turret in place and seal it with a dull-coat. Add the glass parts and give it away to my neighbor to hang in his office.

The original decals from (approx.) 1966 were a challenge but eventually I beat them into submission.... in other words I got lucky!!  I had to mix up a matching Insignia Blue paint to fill in the gaps on the stars and bars, but nothing that won't be hidden or unseen from 4 feet :)
