Title: For Woody regarding Pips Priller Fw-190A-8 at Normandy: No 30mm cannon
Post by: lgriffin on Mon 04/20/15 02:54 PM
Woody,

I was able to dig up a little information about Pips Priller's Fw-190A-8 at Normandy. There's agreement that his plane did not have the extra 30mm guns. One source says his plane was a "light armament" A-8 without the outer 20mm guns, also. Not sure if this pic is of the same plane, but this shows no guns in the outer positions:

Shane Hedlund will know the answer for sure.

Calling me out of retirement are you?
I remember as if it was yesterday, we shook hands and I told Pips, "You won't make it back".  He laughed and told me to tell Goering to "go to hell", he climbed in and took off in his Fw-190 A-8  marked with a black 13 and personalized Red heart on the left side of the cockpit.  Yellow tail and under cowling markings as always.  The side markings did not have the "head of the eagle but only the "tail from the cowling back, outlined in thin white if I remember.  A standard canopy, not "blown".  Some say the fuselage national markings were missing the white on the lower half, but it could have been the addition repainting and mottling that was going on at that period of the war.  Overall, the mottling on the fuselage was quite light and heavily over sprayed with RLM 76.   I remember there was slight wear around the aft canopy, but otherwise in good condition considering this was the Kommodore of JG 26!  The nose spinner did not sport the usual spiral but was RLM 70, like the props. Oh yes, he had the standard armament of an A-8 as the 30 MM were limited in supply and sent to the "Storm" Units as a priority.

As he taxied out for what I thought was his last flight, his mechanic walked up and said, "Herr Hedlund, your stupid T-shirts of German unit markings are an embarrassment to the Luftwaffe, your too old and have the gait of Goring himself".

I woke in a cold sweat, and realized someone asked me something about an aircraft in a scale other than 1/72.  I am mortified.  I suited up and got in my SM-79.

I hope this helped, (it did me)

Looking at the profile in front of me, the outer cannons are missing, leaving only the wing root and cowling guns.  Most of his 101 kills were fighters and medium British bombers, only 11 USAAF heavy bombers, so the heavier armament did not matter as much as the increased roll capability of a dog fight?
