Title: Polly-Scale military color acrylic line going away....
Post by: Shane on Tue 09/21/10 10:34 PM
This may be old news to most of you and I am passing it along only to bring those who have not heard this up to speed.  I, for one, don't use the stuff.  My motto is, "paint that tries to kill you, only makes you stronger".  As such, I still still live in the enamel and floquil world and only use water based paint when relatives are visiting.  Heck, they might think I have a meth lab in the basement.....

KPL hobby sent this to me in their news letter.

"Testors has confirmed the termination of the Polly-Scale military color acrylic line.  We've sent several messages out already addressing this subject.  As before, we encourage you to purchase what you desire now.  Available, identified Testors equivalents are identified in the attached sheet.  Note that in some cases, exact equivalents may not be available but rough equivalents may be.  Consult the Testors Web site to find those."

Well, after 30 minutes of trying to copy and paste the cross reference table, I can't get Excel to cooperate with me.  Soooo.... I'm heading down to the meth lab to put a coat of paint on the conning tower of a goto sub.....

I have seen that in other fora as well. It's a shame, because Polly Scale provides the hardest finishes of all the acrylic paints.  Testor's Acryl line has improved over the years and its biggest weakness, adhesion to plastic, is much better.

Thats a good point Lee. I use MM acrylics with their thinner and I like the color presentation they give and their color selection but the drying time is long. I usually have to wait a couple days if I plan on taping and stuff.

There's an artist medium called GAC 200 that I've used succesfully to increase film hardness and adhesion of acrylics to plastic.

see http://www.goldenpaints.com/justpaint/jp12article3.php (http://www.goldenpaints.com/justpaint/jp12article3.php)

Usually available at local art stores or at Dick Blick on-line.

Also, thinning acrylics with lacquer thinner (discussed at last meeting) will slightly improve adhesion to plastics.
