What exactly is a Vingnette and how does it differ from a Diorama?

A diorama is a combination of model(s) and a believable setting that tells a story, sets a mood, or creates a charged atmosphere. In addition to evaluating the modeling of a diorama's individual elements, the judges will consider the strength of the diorama's story line or mood and the overall presentation of the diorama. These three factors are equally important. Dioramas with superbly modeled components but a weak story line and presentation will almost certainly lose to a diorama with well-modeled components and strong story and presentation.
Not sure about the vignettes, but it seems to something smaller in scope and usually only a few figures. From the handbook under Dioramas, the following categories.
Figures
730. Vignettes (5 or fewer figures)
732. Dioramas (more than 5 figures)
A vignette is just a scene, for example I am working on a 1/48 KV-II going down a road with two figures in the tank and a kid standing behind a fence with his hands on his hips watching the tank going down the road. There is no story line to speak of so it is a vignette.I could enter it in vignettes but chances are that it would be moved to the military diorama category up in Lynchburg. It can get confusing. In my experience vignettes are primarily a figure or two with some sort of setting.A diorama is supposed to tell a story for example, two GIs are walking in front of a building and one of the GIs has a finger over his mouth telling his buddy to be quiet and around the corner are two Germans waiting for the GIs.I hope this make sense.

thanks guys! I have a question about what category to place the following 2 models in:
I have a 1/700 scene depicting a german submarine sinking a freighter off the East Coast of NC. The scene depicts 1 sub with Kreigsmarine, 1 sinking freighter with US Navy personnel on the freighter and in life boats. Would this go in dioramas, vignettes, or just in the submarine category?
I have a 1/350 scale german sub with Kreigsmarine on a base depicting it's return from the "Happy Time" off the East coast of the US. Vignettes or submarine category?

No expert, I would think the first one would be a diorama and the second a vignette.
