Title: USS North Carolina
Post by: Joe M on Wed 03/09/11 09:15 PM
Here's something else that's been in my closet for a long time that I decided to work on... Waterline 1:700 scale USS North Carolina. Many of the 5" guns have been broke, so I'll have to rebuild those, but otherwise going to do this one out of the box and try my hand at sculpting some water... should be fun and good practice for rebuilding my model if the USS Saipan.

Hey Guys, a couple more pics of the USS North Carolina as it sits on my bench tonight. I found quite a few pieces missing from this kit as I got into construction, but nothing that won't make it look like a decent representation... also want to try my hand at using gel medium to make water... should be interesting.

looks good Joe. Funny I just read an article on sculpting water with celluclay. I would like to do a PT boat in a water diorama.

Bill, I'll let you know how the gel medium behaves!

Yeah, let us know how the gel medium behaves, I'm interested in all the different ways to make a water/ocean scene.

The last sub model I did of a german uboat returning from a long cruise (it was in our contest) I used spackle over the styrofoam. I then painted it with different layers of blues/greens/grays to resemble the ocean waves and added a little gloss to get that sheen that water has. It turned out okay.

I'm currently working on scenes for a D-Day landing craft and a tugboat at a warf all using spackle over styrofoam.
