Title: Changes at Carolinas Aviation Museum?
Post by: BenB on Wed 11/23/11 08:44 AM
I just got an e-mail from a friend saying that there are rumors that the museum is going to be getting rid of their military planes to concentrate on civilian stuff. He specifically said they were getting rid of the F-100D (to be honest, that one was a waste of a lot of time & money) and the F-4S (NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!). Anyone connected with the museum know anything? None of of my old contacts there are still around.

I'm thinking the F-4 will fit in the front yard, right next to the big oak tree. I'll just tell the HOA its a Christmas decoration. Then a New Years one. Then an Easter one. Then....

What will be our closest Air museum with any Military subjects then?

Probably that museum in Hickory or the Virginia Air & Space Museum and Air Park, both in Hampton. There was also a small museum on the General Aviation side of Richmond's (RIC) airport that had a few military planes, including an A-7D. Other than those, I guess it will be DC or Warner-Robbinis, GA.

Still no confirmation regarding the Charlotte rumors. I can't get ahold of any of my old contacts there.

IIRC, Ronnie has some gear on display there.

Yeah, I went there a few months ago and it's changed a bunch also.   the fella that used to own the B-24 and Avenger died a couple of years ago and they had to sell off a bunch of stuff to keep the place running since he funded most of it.  They still have a great display of uniforms, equipment and paintings but not much in the way of actual combat aircraft of vehicles.  It is one of the few places I've been to that has a real torpedo on display and enough models hanging from the ceiling that you'd think you were in the Cameron Village Hobby Shop again.   I
