Title: Suggestion for a 2012 Club Build
Post by: Bill L. on Mon 12/19/11 10:16 AM
Ryan,

I would like to suggest the 'Curt Bandel Club Build'.  Curt, if you recall, was the modeler that gave over 100 kits of all manufacture and subject matter to our club yesterday.  Since almost everyone took at least one of his donated kits home, I was thinking we could ask everyone who did (including the kids) to build one and submit it on a future date TBD.  No prizes, not a competitive build, but a creative and 'Just For Fun' build.  'What If's' would be welcome and encouraged (hear that Ronnie??).

Obviously this would be open to club discussion. And lastly, if you did not select anything from the donated kits, you would still be encouraged to pull a kit from your stash (maybe something you may not have planned to build) and participate.  It's more fun for everyone if everyone joins in.

Thoughts?

Bill,

That is an excellent idea, had something along same lines and like the direction of this one.

Love this idea. Give everyone  until September or October. I'm excited.

Already started the Revell 1/53?? F94, I like the subject, terrible kit, no awful kit....1/2 a tube of putty and scraping all of the lines and rivet off, later.....6 hours straight....it still looks awful.  Anyone know where to get color pics of the thing?  I'd like to do the ANG 139th Fighter squadron that flew out of Schenectady, NY.  I have some black and whites but no color.  They also have a logo on the front that I can't make out.  There is a web site that has the serial numbers of the F94B and the numbers I have pics for are FA 830 859 908 and 5323.  Any info would be helpful.  I can make most of the decals with the decal program from Micro Mark unless someone has better ones.

Very cool idea Bill, I've already built 3 of those kits since Sunday...in my mind.  I like the part about "wiffer" subjects like "what if" I actually get some kits built this year?

Isn't the Revell kit an F-94C?  It was the second model I ever built ( at five years old with help from my father).  There are some good books by David Menard: "Before Centuries", and "USAF Plus 15" that have lots of color photos of Starfires.  I would do a Google image search for F-94s and see what turns up.  The new Life magazine archives have a number of beautiful color images of this relatively obscure jet.

I'm in as well. It was a real nice gesture Curt offered. Completed entries could make their way to the USO afterwards as a possibility as well

Call me crazy, but I'm in as well. Maybe a French missile sub - Heller "Le Redoutable" (yeah, I figured if I didn't take it, no one else would have...) or maybe I'll do a diorama with the Revell Nike Hercules. I've already been doing some research on that end...

Need to add an airbrush to my Christmas wish list!

Let me see what I can dig up on the Schenectady Starfires, I know that my Dad did a Boys from Syracuse F-94B years ago (roughly same aircraft but with the "gun nose".

Count me in for an Otaki 1/48 F6F-3 Hellcat.  Even though I didn't get a kit in the feeding frenzy, I noticed that there was one on the list and I have one in my stash I've been meaning to build someday anyway.  This will be motivation to do so.

Lee, Great pics....thanks a bunch, Mike it would be very helpful if you could find the Schenectady boys or just their logo on the nose.  I found a couple of color pics from Griffiss AFB in Rome NY.  http://www.millionmonkeytheater.com/F-94homepage.html has all of the serial numbers from A B and C and some pics. You can also find some pics attached with some serial numbers.  They have all of the early forgotten jets as well.  Give a small operational history on each.
Big question is checkerboard decals.....Griffiss 94's had checkerboard rudders, yellow swatch side pods with 3 stars......anyone help with this??

This is GREAT!  As more and more folks join in the momentum increases.  Lets plan on discussing this (Ryan - agenda item in January's meeting) and see if we can get everyone involved.

Again, anything goes - serious builds and 'What Ifs' alike.  I'll suggest that we target the finally for the September meeting, giving us the summer to work on it as well.... maybe during some of the informal summer meetings??? how ever you like.  Remember, the kids (those under 18 yrs of age)are invited to participate too.

I'm not sure if Curt will be in the area then, but if he is I will reach out to him and invite him to the meeting.  Nothing a modeler likes more than see his kits get built!!

Thanks for all the enthusiasm!!

To JonE:

I have a kit from the Curt Bandle donations with your name on it.  Contact me off-board and we'll work out the details.  Merry Christmas  ;)

Twobobs had F-16 Nellis Taxi Cab sheets, in 32/48/72 with yellow and black checks.  Sold out on their site, http://twobobs.net/contents/en-us/d38.html#p98 , but I think Hayes had some left during the big sale.  That's the closest match I can think of off the top of my head, although that sheet might not have enough in the right sizes for your use.  Yellow and Black checks are the USAF Weapons School colors, so you might find other decals from their aircraft.

I'm in.......I picked up the Revell kit of the Super Guppy. I'll see if I can find a section of a space craft to fit inside.

Ron,
Considering the Super Guppys were used more regularly by AirBus Industries to transport AirBus components (to include fuselage sections for assembly, having the Guppy "swallowing" an Airbus might be interesting..

Check the attached photos for ideas.
