Title: Where do you get your paint?
Post by: Boltgun88 on Fri 06/05/09 11:47 PM
Been out of the hobby since the late 80's.

Where are you guys getting your paint from?

Specifically - FS Numbers[Testors Model Master lists them on the bottle],  and equivalents - Hasegawa Painting Guide [Gunze Sangyo Aqueous Hobby Color Paints] and Xtracolor.........

I have a Luftwaffe F-4F Phantom that is feeling ignored after I spent 2+ hours on a Japanese hobby website with 0 results for a paint match.

Ya think that Barnes and Noble or Starbucks coulda branched off into plastic kits while I took my hiatus........

Advice on modern modeling purchasing habits is requested.

Grazzia,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Since Hobby Masters closed, there isn't anywhere in Raleigh to get paint. The shop in Fuquay sells some Tamiya paint. Hungates has pretty much ceased to be a source of anything. If you want to drive down to Fayetteville, Hayes Hobbies has a good paint selection.

Online, Squadron Mail Order, Great Models, Roll Models, and Sprue Brothers have good selections. Roll carries Xtracolor/Xtracrylix, which has the F-4F colors straight out of the bottle. The only problem with Roll is they take about three weeks to get your order to you. Two Bobs sells Xtracrylix, but they don't have as good a selection. You can't get Gunze Aqueous paints in the US any more, only the Mr. Color stuff, which is supposed to be fantastic.

Cheers!

Ben

The Hobby Shop in Fuquay has Tamiya and Woody mentioned they were going to stock some Testors Model Master. The shop can order stuff for you as well from what the guys have said.

Personally I still like looking through the racks.. sick, I know.  If I can I'll make a list for upcoming projects for one or two and then make a run to Fayetteville and go to Hayes Hobbies.   I get the paint I want, look at all the cool stuff and feel like a kid again looking at all those planes hanging from the ceiling.. not to mention supporting one of the last classic hobby stores around.

In fact I'm due for a run.  Probably the week after next.  I need some Polly Scale Israeli colors for the next project.

Hobby Lobby in Burlington, I make a trip to Hobby Town USA once a month over in Greensboro, and from Sprue Brothers or Great Models. Thats about it. Oh and when I go to shows I also purchase paints.
