Tail Codes and Numbers on Navy Aircraft

Bill,   

       Thinking there was an easy response to this - I refered to the Squadron Signal books: "Navy Air Colors Vol. 1 1911-1945 and Vol. 2 1945-1985". I believe the codes are aircraft specific. I can bring the books to the next meet for you to look through.

Does anyone have any insight on how tail codes and the numbers on the nose of modern U S Navy aircraft are assigned and what they mean?  All I know is that Pacific Fleet Planes have a N and Atlantic Fleet planes have a A in the tail code.
