Well it's been a l-o-n-g while since I worked on this Jug, but I managed to steal a few hours to make some more progress. Tonight's work included:
1) mounting the windscreen (windscreen and canopy were dipped in Future and dried the previous night),
2) masked the canopy for paint prep,
3) built the flaps (mine will be in the down position),
4) attached the supercharger and external bottom cover,
5) and most importantly I built the cowl.

This is significant, as I plan to use a Montex mast to paint the black/white checker boards instead of using the CE decals (they'll be the fall-back plan should the masking fail to achieve the desired results.

Everything needs to dry before I continue. Maybe I'll go do some more sanding in the USS Seawolf......

Finally back at it.  Here's tonights post.  This is the first time I've tried 'wiring' an engine.  I'll paint the wires tomorrow a nice dirty brown.

Hope you like it!

You're coming right along with that! Very cool!

Here's an update on the build:

The fuselage is almost complete with some remaining seam (Mr. Surface) work to do, the main gear is in process and the engine detailing is underway.  Taking a break to let things dry for now....

FYI - I've been posting my daily (or as close to that as I can) build updates over on LSP.  Too much to duplicate so check out my build over there.

There's also a F-4E 'Chico the Gun Fighter' build and a 1/24 P-51D build worth checking out!!

I'll still post major updates here too.

Confusion and lack of good resources...So I turn to the local experts to confirm:

In one build review the wing root around the .50 cals is noticeably a different color (one modeler used silver/titanium like the CE decal sheet suggests).  It can be seen as well in the picture Lee G. posted to this thread. That seems improbable to me but I'm unsure.

Any thoughts?
Thanks

I usually start painting with an RAF Dark Earth type brown, and while its wet, I mix in some burnt umber, and later pinwash the edges it with oils as I do the rest of the cockpit...

A touch of drybrushing for the highlights for the final effect.  Usually a lightened base color, but you could go light or dark to get whatever effect you wish.

This may sound over complicated, but its not. In the bigger scales, it looks pretty neat.

I kinda like that idea of the leathery finish. It fits with what I was thinking.  What blend would be best??
If it looks crapppy I can always blacken it up.

When they say Red brown, they mean a dark leather color.  If you don't want black, then go for a leather flight jacket type brown.

Thanks for the kind words and the guidance. The recommended color in the the directions was a red-brown.  Guess I saw red :)
I'll fix that today. Thanks

Hey, that turned out really nice!!!

The cockpit is looking good.  One small criticism: that head rest would be black instead of red.  Red headrests on US planes indicate an ejection seat, at least from 1948 to 1962 or so.  Considering in 1944 that there weren't any ejection seats, the red wouldn't be there.   :P

Looks pretty nice :) As one who uses photo etch I agree it can be a pain and some of the parts they dream up are so small I wonder how you put them on when you literally have nothing to hold... I use some pretty pointy tweezers , but patience with the etch is a virtue.
