Thanks Ryan and Tony! The site you provided was a good place to start. It had photos of the interior. This helo had to be very loud inside considering the size of the radial engine.

I have the KP kit with CIRO mods which correct several ill's with the kit. I do intend to also get th HB kit to do an Mi17 swapping parts as makes sense. The Ciro resin is quite detailed. The Eduard interior for the troop area and clam shell doors looks quite nice.

Thanks Ryan. I'll keep tabs on the helicopter forum to see what changes are needed. It seems the big discussion right now is the size of the external fuel tanks. The best kit is the 1/72 Hobbyboss?

I think so depending on the detail you want and version. I thought I had a KP kit to show you the difference to the HB kit but I can't find it. Pavla makes some resin to back date the birds plus other mods.

thanks Ryan, I'll have to look into building one!

If you do let me know, I have resin set for the rotor balance weights (the yellow things on top of the rotor) that can can be copied. It has six weight instead of the correct five but if you are building this bird that is going to be one of the easier fixes that have to be made, IMO.

Would like to see the Hips & Hinds that the Army operates here in the States.

Sure..... http://www.jrtc-polk.army.mil/OPFOR/aircraft.html

For those who may want to build a Canadian bird (Tony) or know more about the different types of Hips. http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/modl_mi-8.html

I think the little radome on the Hip's nose makes it look a little less, 'alien' as well. I'll be the first to admit I'm not a fan of Soviet/Russian equipment (perhaps even less so than German WWII) but the Mi-8/Mi-17's are the world standard when it comes to hot and high rotary winged flying.

Seems everyone in the west is getting Hips - Brits, CIA.

Take lots of work to make the Hobbyboss (best kit in 1/72) work.

Here's something a little different - one of four Canadian-leased Mi-17V-5 "Hip", helos currently operating in Afghanistan as armed escorts for their Chinooks. They are designated CH-178's in Canadian service and are serialed 178404 to 178407.
