Future Jug driver!

Great shot! 90% sure that this is a 138th FS "Boys from Syracuse" bird from their very early days.

Bill,

I've got 3 P-47's: A Hasegawa, D-5 Razorback; Tamiya, D-25 Bubbletop; ProModeler N. I've got a bunch of decals that I can share. I just got a Zotz set that's got some cool ones. I'll bring some to share.

Woody didn't you say you had some for Miss Mutt? I have the Hasegawa kit decals but seems like your's were Cutting Edge or something better than Hasegawa. I've got some you said you'd be interested in I think.

That would be great Lee. Thanks

Bill, I got a sheet of 1/48 scale decals  for the P-47, and it has some 4th FG aircraft -- I'll bring it Sunday if I don't have to work.

I have to echo both Bill L2 and Lee, in that until I got up close and personal with P-47D 'Hun Hunter IV' I never realized what a beast the aircraft really is and have gotten a deeper appreciation for this aircraft. The 1/32 P-47D 'Bubble Top' was an excellent kit to built, probably IMO one of the best kits on the market today. I will be bringing mine to the Dec. meeting if you want to check it out (it was finished in Feb. 2011).

Welcome to the dark side, Bill!

"Teddy" of the 56th FG did indeed look like that.  RAF paints: Dark Green and Ocean Grey over Medium Sea Grey.  Unusual yellow squadron codes that only lasted a couple of months before going back to white.  Towards the end of the war, the 56th was the only 8th AF group flying P-47s and had some wild camouflage paint schemes: all black, all plum, dark blue and light blue.

In 1/32, the Hasegawa bubbletop is superb.  I liked the Trumpeter razorback, too.  In 1/48, Tamiya is the way to go, but don't discount the old Monogram kit as it builds to a nice replica.  The Hasegawa kit is pretty good, although it is slightly lacking in capturing the girth of the airplane.  Lastly, "Jug" is a post-war term that modelers and warbird owners have latched onto.  Talking to Hal Shook and other veteran P-47 pilots specifically about this, they unanimously referred to the airplane as either a "P-47" or a "Thunderbolt" back in the days.  I'm certain that Martin Caidin is responsible for the Jug myth (either because of its shape resembling a milk jug or short for juggernaut) and it has been repeated so often in reference books that it has become fact, the way that Kirk said "Beam me up, Scotty! (never said it) or Vince Lombardi said "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing" (never said that either).

Thanks for the info Lee. I am going to start with the old Revell/Monogram kit 1/48. I picked one up at Michaels for about six bucks.  I will use aftermarket decals and wheel set. Its hard finding decals for 4th fighter group Thunderbolts. I found Boisee Bee on Sprue Brothers but to be honest I wish I could find something that has not been done so much. I will keep on searching for other planes but right now thats what I am thinking.

BillL2: Bill, you are correct! In 2007, I did a P-47M, Noseart Fireball.  I don't remember what colors I put together, but it was dark blue and light blue, a very striking airplane.  It's in the case at Hayes Hobby.  The one you saw last month was Tamiya's 1/48 scale bubbletop, Eileen.  Got the decals from Bill Leary.   Whichever plane you decide to do, if you change your mind, I have tons of decals.  So before you buy any, let me know.  Glad you're getting hooked on Jugs! They have so many schemes I could build them the rest of my life.  I think I have 7 built.  As you may know, my favorite planes are FW190s, Jugs, 109s and P40s.  Starting to get hooked on Skyraiders.  See you sunday.  Woody G.   P.S. I'll be bringing Clyde.

thats downright unAmerican to not have a jug in your collection. best kits in 1/48 are Tamiya razorback and hasegawa bubbletop. and don't forget proper gun alightment. good luck clyde

Here is a colorful shot of the Jug. I think Woody built one of these. Has this been color enhanced?
