I've tried to copy some of Mr. Paine's techniques in my own dioramas. The guy was a creative genius with everyday items! Reading one of these brochures was where
I learned I could paint almost anything- like tissue or paper towels or even tape! He helped expand my vision for possibilities. I wish I could have met him.

For many years, his creations were considered the "standard" to strive for.  I have one of the original Kalmbach books on dioramas written by Shep - I still refer to it for techniques.

Both his family and the modeling community have lost a true gentleman modeler.

Rest in peace, Mr. Paine. He left quite a legacy and a huge footprint on the plastic community, at least in the U.S.

He was 69.  His influence on thousands of modelers over the years cannot be underestimated.  I never met him but those who have said he was gracious and modest about his talents.

He also was not a fan of model contests.  My favorite quote from him: "Wanna compete?  Go play tennis."
